Neurocognition in Youth with Prediabetes

Study overview:

The Yale School of Medicine is conducting a study to understand how metabolism (the way your body uses food) affects cognition in school-age youth. In this study, we will follow children and adolescents every 6 months over a 2-year period.

The study consists of 2 Full Assessments and 3 Short Assessments. Each Full Assessment contains: 2 MRI sessions, 1 Lab session with puzzles and other cognitive tests, and 1 Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). These 4 sessions may take up to 10 hours, spread across 4 separate days in a 1-2 month window. Each Short Assessment is similar to the Lab session, but with fewer tests, and will take about 1 hour. The total time commitment will be about 23 hours over the course of 2 years.

FAQ:

  • How much will I be paid? Up to $990. You will receive payment after each session totaling up to $740 if you complete all the sessions. You will also receive up to $250 in Stop & Shop gift card bonuses for completing supplementary 3-day food diaries at each assessment.

  • How long is the study? 24 months

  • Where does this study take place? The sessions will take place in Dr. Small’s lab at 1 Church St, New Haven, CT 06510 and The Anlyan Center at 300 Cedar St, New Haven, CT 06519.

  • Will transportation be provided? You will need to transport and accompany your child to all assessment days. Travel expenses can be reimbursed up to $250.

  • Will my child miss school for these assessments? All appointments can be scheduled for either the weekend or after school. A doctor’s note will be provided for any missed school days or early dismissals.

  • Are there any health benefits to my child for participating in this study? This study is not meant to diagnose or treat your child. However, every 6 months we can give you an update on your child’s body composition, blood glucose levels, and A1C.
